A simple tool, now at version 1.05 is available here. At present it supports only adult Caucasoid males.
Posted by Dienekes at December 6, 2003 11:04 PM | PermaLinkout of curiousity, do you classify typical looking brown people (south asian) as caucasoid enough where it's worth using?
Posted by: razib at December 7, 2003 06:49 PMWell, I do, but it should be noted that the data used to build this calculator do not include South Asians. You can always try though, your classification may not mean much, but it will also tell you some of your indices (long-faced/broad-headed, etc.)
Posted by: Dienekes at December 7, 2003 08:01 PMcool.
btw, you should disallow empty entries, i just tested that. throws out some PHP warnings.
if you want all fields entered, you could just do a javascript loop that checks sees if all the entries are filled so you don't have to alter it later if you have new fields.
Posted by: razib at December 7, 2003 09:24 PM Euclidean Distance Mahalanobis Distance Cosine Similarity
Proto-Europoid: 18 22 0.37
Mediterranoid: 33 66 -0.39
Alpinoid: 26 33 -0.46
Irano-Nordoid: 18 22 0.27
Dinaroid: 17 10 0.34
It said what I thought it should say.
I'm mixed but the predominant impression is that of a slightly Dinarized North Mediterranean or dark Nordic.
Your classification is Dinaroid (using Euclidean distance), Dinaroid (using Mahalanobis distance), and Proto-Europoid (using Cosine similarity).
Nice calculator.
One measurement was false...interesting how it is changing the result:
Euclidean Distance Mahalanobis Distance Cosine Similarity
Proto-Europoid: 14 25 0.3
Mediterranoid: 20 42 -0.26
Alpinoid: 17 20 -0.48
Irano-Nordoid: 10 11 0.3
Dinaroid: 11 7 0.2
Your classification is Irano-Nordoid (using Euclidean distance), Dinaroid (using Mahalanobis distance), and Irano-Nordoid (using Cosine similarity).
I made an further experiment, I wrote typical Alpine measurements and looked what happened. The result was correct but the "most distant" type was a picture of an Alpine!
Similar things happened when a Mediterranean had a "similar type" which was in fact Alpine...
The calculator is simple but good for typical NCEuropeans and Westerners, but the "similar-dissimilar" thing and the pictures chosen are not perfect...

The calculator works fo Caucasoids not for "NCEuropeans" or "Westerners", whatever that means. Please post the "typical Alpine measurements" and the "most distant type", otherwise your observation is not helpful.
Posted by: Dienekes at December 9, 2003 11:24 PMYour cephalic index is: 86.1 (hyperbrachycephalic)
Your height/length index is: 66.7 (hypsicephalic)
Your height/breadth index is: 77.4 (tapeinocephalic)
Your facial index is: 81.5 (euryprosopic)
Your upper facial index is: 51.9 (euryene)
Your nasal index is: 71.1 (mesorrhine)
Your estimated endocranial volume is: 1534 cc (aristencephalic)
is this typically Mediterranoid?
or this picture?

The picture is right, its an Alpine, but the analysis says 3 times "Mediterranoid".
And a 2nd question, how is it possible that in some cases all three distances show different results f.e. Nordoid, Dinaroid and Proto-Europid?
I mean i appreciate the calculator, but I think there are possibilities to improve it.
Chris, I didn't ask you to tell me the RESULTS you got but to tell me the NUMBERS you entered.
