Welsh Beauty is in the Genes (BBC)
Some informative excerpts:
"Catherine [Zeta Jones] is a case of a natural Celtic beauty.
"She stands out in Hollywood as the one with the curves and the jet black hair - that comes from her Welsh blood - when a lot of women can look a bit bland."
The idea of classic Welsh features that are passed down through the generations is one supported by Swansea-based academic, Professor Paul Brain.
The evolutionary zoologist has done a number of studies on the link between biology and psychology and believes the Welsh gene pool has elements which can help women with a Welsh heritage in the beauty stakes.
"In Welsh women, I suspect that it is something to do with their overall shape - the symmetry of their facial features is very regular.
"They tend to have long lustrous dark hair and are pretty fine boned."
...
"With Welsh women, the contrast in their looks - between the Celtic dark hair and the white of their skins - is an attractive combination.
Mr Breverton said pictures of historical Welsh beauties, such as Nell Gwyn, the mistress of Charles II, showed they had full lips.
...
"Zeta Jones is typically Welsh looking and has dark skin which is not unusual in the south west region of Wales.
Posted by Dienekes at April 27, 2004 02:18 PM | PermaLinkThere are ofcourse some beautifull Welsh women but there are also some really ugly Welsh women. In Wales (just like in Ireland and Scotland) there are a lot of redheads. About 15-20 % of the Welsh have that red/ginger/reddishblond hair and those are features I dont find attractive.
When it comes to beauty in Europe the French women are number 1 in my opinion.
Posted by: 1juice at April 28, 2004 01:20 AMJust because someone has red hair does not mean that they are ugly. Just as there is no shortage of ugly people with dark hair.
Posted by: Xguy at April 28, 2004 09:16 AMI believe that Catherine Z-J had at least a nose job since she first became famous. But, even so,, she is still the real deal when it comes to beauty, unlike stars with lots of personality but awkward features like Julia Roberts.
For European beauty, I'd vote for Northern Italian women.

Posted by: razib at April 30, 2004 04:34 PMI don't know CJZ's genealogy, but from the fact that she has a grandmother called Zeta I would guess there is some Mediterranean ancestry.
Or maybe a touch of the Tiger Bay tarbrush? (I mean this in a wholly inoffensive way!)
Posted by: David B at May 1, 2004 03:25 AMBut Zeta-Jones has never become a terribly popular figure, despite the beauty. Interesting, no? My hunch is that it's partly because of her beauty, which is pretty anonymous -- if anything, her features are too regular. What tends to hook people in a movie star is some combo of beauty in a conventional sense and irregularity. Incidentally, this is the theory of beauty that comes from classical art -- much in the way of symmetry and regularity, but iterrupted by memorable irregularities and "imperfections." Zeta-Jones always looks to me (even in "Zorro" or "Chicago") like a replacement for a real star.
Of course, then there are those pretty beauties like Sharon Stone -- airline-stewardess pretty -- who triumph, at least for a few years, over the banality of their beauty.
But it's one of the complaints of many filmgoing buddies of mine these days. Movie women these days often aren't terribly memorable. They're incredible and sparkly -- more fit and better madeup than ever before. But, what with surgery, cosmetics, stylists, orthodenture, trainers, etc, too many of them come out of the same mold. They're perfect but they're boring. One of the glories of movies and the stage has always been the combo of beauty and "personality." Not enough of that around these days.
I loved surfing a site the other day devoted to women stars of the '60s and'70s, and part of what was so remarkable about the faces and bods on display were what we'd consider imperfections -- slightly tangled teeth, or flabby thighs. Yet (and I hope I'm not just losing myself in nostalgia) most of the the women were distinctive.

I agree with your theory above, but in CZJ's case, I think it's the fact that she's had all these kids and settled down into married life.

I don't know CJZ's genealogy, but from the fact that she has a grandmother called Zeta I would guess there is some Mediterranean ancestry.
According to this site, this is how her grandmother got her name:
Quote:
"Famously, Catherine's middle name "Zeta", was her grandmother's name, derived from a boat her great-grandfather sailed. "The Zeta" was the pride of Swansea's copper exporting fleet in the 19th Century."
Your right Juice, red hair is ugly. I am irish french and mongolian and unfortunatly I was delt by genetics copper hair. You can imangine how ugly I was, having slanted eyes and red hair. I chose to dye my hair black so I'd look natural.
Posted by: Kristen at May 6, 2004 06:58 AMTo identify black-hair as a typical 'Celtic' feature is something of an over-simplification, if not totally absurd... Beginning from antiquity, "Celtic" relates much more to "Germanic" in terms of bodily features (hair color, eye color, stature etc) that e.g. to somewhat 'darker' racial types like the Mediterranean. But then again I suppose many confuse Silurian with Celtic... ;)
